Blanche VasnierIn connection with the release of my new CD of Debussy mélodies with pianist Simon Lepper, and along with the enormously talented and experienced  stage director, Nina Brazier, I have developed a programme of these songs into an engaging retelling of the story of Debussy’s relationship with the high soprano, Blanche Vasnier.  Debussy And His Muse

tells the story of their love affair, not only through the many songs he wrote for her, but through readings of letters, diary extracts and memoirs.

A song recital and a love story rolled into one,

this programme of Words and Music is not to be missed.

About The Show:
When an 18 year old Debussy took a job as accompanist in the studio of fading diva Madame Moreau-Sainti, he fell in love with one of  her most talented  pupils, the enchanting Marie-Blanche Vasnier. His green-eyed muse, 12 years his senior, mother of two, and married to a well-respected civil engineer, sang her way in to his heart, as he charmed his way into the Vasnier household.  During this period of great happiness, creativity and self-discovery, Debussy wrote nearly 40 songs, 27 of which were dedicated to Marie.
Award-winning duo Gillian Keith and Simon Lepper, established and respected Debussy interpreters, are marking the release of their second volume of songs, largely from the Vasnier period.  This programme of some of his most ravishing Vasnier mélodies is presented within a compelling script written by Gillian Keith and directed by Nina Brazier. Illuminated by extracts from diaries, letters and essays, it allows the audience a closer look into this extraordinary relationship. Focusing primarily on the early songs of Debussy, (including his virtuosic ‘Séguidille‘ only published this year) the programme is complemented by mélodies by Debussy’s friend, Paul Vidal,  and Edouard Lalo.
